Trump says Xi call ‘productive’, leaders to meet in November

United States President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, have held a “productive” phone conversation.
Trump says the pair will meet at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in South Korea in November.
Trump says will host Erdogan on September 25
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he would host the Turkish leader at the White House.

“We are working on many Trade and Military Deals with the President, including the large-scale purchase of Boeing aircraft, a major F-16 Deal, and a continuation of the F-35 talks, which we expect to conclude positively,” he wrote.

Turkiye, a member of NATO, has sought to return to the F-35 programme for years. Ankara was officially removed in 2019, after buying Russian S-400 missile systems.
Trump told Xi China’s military parade ‘phenomenal and beautiful’: State media
Xinhua’s summary of Xi and Trump’s call says the US president expressed admiration for China’s military parade on September 3.

The parade showed off China’s military hardware, but was also widely seen as a political message on China’s growing influence.

At the time, Trump, in a post on Truth Social, accused Xi and his top-billed attendees – Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un – of “conspiring against” the US.

But today, Trump told Xi the “phenomenal and beautiful”, according to Xinhua. Trump has repeatedly expressed his affinity for military parades, controversially hosting his own in Washington, DC earlier this year.

Xi statement shows China willing to ‘play hardball’ on trade
Xi’s warning to Trump against imposing further trade restrictions on China shows Beijing is willing to take a hard line in trade talks, according to Wendy Cutler, the senior vice president of the Asia Society Policy Institute.

Xi told Trump “that the US side should avoid taking unilateral trade restrictions to prevent undermining the achievements made by both sides through multiple rounds of consultations”, according to a summary by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Trump on Thursday had said that Russia’s war in Ukraine could end if European countries put higher tariffs on China, however, he has not said if he plans to raise tariffs on Beijing over its purchase of Moscow’s oil.

Xi’s position showed Beijing’s willingness to “play hardball, and a need to get paid by Washington for any concessions it makes”, Culter told The Associated Press news agency.

“This will complicate the talks, particularly if China continues to insist on relaxation of US export controls and tariffs, areas where the US is reluctant to move,” she said.
