Diogo Jota died in a fiery car crash just 10 days after his wedding

 Liverpool soccer star Diogo Jota has died in a fiery car crash after his Lamborghini veered off a road in Spain on Thursday—just 11 days after he married the mom of his three children.

Just after midnight, the automobile collided and caught fire near Zamora in northwest Spain, killing the 28-year-old Portuguese striker and his 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, who was also a Portuguese soccer player, according to authorities.

The incident happened in the Spanish region of Zamora. Jota and his brother passed away on Thursday, July 3, at around 12:30 a.m. local time, according to local police, who spoke .

The Spanish Civil Guard said that Jota and his brother were discovered dead after their car ran off the road and caught fire.

According to a press release issued by the Portuguese Football Federation on Thursday, Jota and his brother passed away, and they were “completely devastated.” Additionally, Liverpool Football Club posted a black-and-white image of Jota to Instagram along with the statement, “Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”

The athlete passed away a few days after getting married to Rute Cardoso, his longtime wife, with whom he had three kids. Just a few hours prior to the collision, Jota posted a video from their June 22 wedding on Instagram.

Additionally, on June 28, his wife posted pictures of their special day along with the Portuguese-translated statement, “June 22, 2025 • Yes to forever ♾️.”

Investigators are looking into what caused the crash. No additional vehicles were engaged, according to the authorities.

The Portuguese Football Federation stated in their statement that Diogo Jota and his brother had “fatally died in Zamora, Spain” due to a “tragic accident.”

In a statement, Dr. Pedro Proença, president of the federation, also described their passing as “an irreparable loss for Portuguese football.”

Part of the statement said, “The deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva this morning in Spain have devastated the Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community.” “Much more than a fantastic player, with almost 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.”

“On my behalf and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Jota, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players played, respectively,” said the statement.

“Two champions have left us. We shall make every effort to honor Diogo and André Silva’s legacy every day because their deaths mark an irreversible loss for Portuguese football.”

Additionally, the statement mentioned that the request was made for UEFA to observe a minute of silence before Thursday’s Women’s European Championship match involving the Portuguese women’s team and other teams.

In May, Jota and Liverpool celebrated winning the Premier League. He paid $54 million to join the team in September 2020 after leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to Sky News.

He scored 14 goals in almost 50 games for the Portuguese national team.
