James Gunn explains reason for ‘The Batman 2’ release date delay

James Gunn reveals the real reason behind ‘The Batman 2’ delay, disappointing fans.

Holy disappointment, Bamtan! DC fans got a double dose of dismal Batman movie news to close the year, as The Brave and the Bold and Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II are still years away from screens.

In a social media post, DC Studios co-head and Superman movie filmmaker James Gunn acknowledged the Batman 2 delay.

On his Threads account, Gunn once again responded to a fan’s query about the original trade story’s delay for The Batman: Part II. It was real, Gunn wrote. Yes, it is. The main reason for the delay is the lack of a comprehensive script (as my followers know).

Matt Reeves wants to make the best film possible, but no one can predict how long a script will take. After finalizing a script, big films require two years to pre-produce, shoot, and post-produce.

Gunn repeated around the holidays that “There hasn’t yet been a first draft of a script” for The Batman 2, contradicting claims.

For those who are keeping track, The Batman: Part II will hit theaters in October 2027, marking five years since the first film’s March 2022 release and more than a decade since Reeves joined Ben Affleck’s Batman DCEU film to create The Batman Universe. The COVID-19 pandemic halved Reeves’ debut film’s production, forcing delicate edits, revisions, and reshoots to finish the film and distribute it into a theatrical market still recovering.

The Hollywood strikes of 2023 again delayed Reeves’ production schedule, and many spinoffs (Gotham P.D., Arkham Asylum) have perished in development. Next year, Robert Pattinson will star in a Christopher Nolan film, and co-actor Jeffrey Wright said he hasn’t spoken to Matt Reeves about the sequel “for a while.”

Recent speculations suggest that Gunn’s upcoming DCU picture franchise, which debuts with Superman next year, may be putting the Batman franchise on hold. The situation could potentially worsen, as the Penguin TV series has elevated the Batman franchise to a multimedia premium brand, a status the new DCU has yet to achieve.

It’s curious that Matt Reeves hasn’t had a script idea or draft for The Batman: Part II since 2022, given all the delays and planning for The Penguin, a series said to lead directly into the sequel.

It appears increasingly likely that Reeves will have to navigate new restrictions regarding the characters and storylines he may wish to focus on within the DCU (Clayface), or that DC Studios is awaiting the profitability of a brighter, more family-friendly Superman movie in terms of box office andIf Gunn’s film becomes a hit, it might be challenging to reinvest in Reeves’ Batman franchise, given that a dark, Noir blockbuster doesn’t sell toys, clothes, or accessories. or accessories.
