Farewell to a fashion icon: Roberto Cavalli, pioneer of opulent style, passes away at 83

Roberto Cavalli, the Italian fashion designer known for his extravagant and opulent style, has passed away.

Roberto Cavalli was famous for showcasing models in leopard-print skirts, bejeweled faded jeans, satin corsets, and other boldly flamboyant garments on the runway and red carpets. His age was 83. The corporation made a public statement on Instagram about the loss but did not give any other information.

In 1970, he showcased his first collection under his own name in Paris. Subsequently, in 1972, he made his first appearances on the runways in Florence and Milan. In that very year, he inaugurated his inaugural store at Saint-Tropez, the coastal French resort that would subsequently evolve into a global emblem of opulence and prestige.

In 1980, Cavalli married Eva Maria Düringer, an Austrian model and beauty queen, who subsequently became his business’s creative director. Cavalli had served as a judge during the 1977 Miss Universe competition, in which Düringer was Miss Austria. The couple had a total of three children, with Cavalli having two from his previous marriage. They stayed together for a period of thirty years. In 2023, he and his partner, Sandra Nilsson, celebrated the arrival of their sixth child.
