US school removes bathroom mirrors due to TikTok video
Southern Alamance Middle School in Graham, North Carolina, has taken a unique approach to address a growing issue of students spending excessive time creating TikTok videos in the restroom during class hours. The school reportedly removed bathroom mirrors to curb this distraction.
According to Les Atkins, a spokesperson for the Alamance-Burlington School System, students were utilizing valuable class time by lingering in the restrooms to engage in TikTok activities.
On average, students typically visited the restroom three to four times a day, but there was a noticeable increase, with some students now making seven, eight, or nine visits daily.
The decision to remove the mirrors has shown positive results, with Atkins stating that the frequency and duration of restroom visits have decreased.
The school aims to instill a sense of “digital citizenship” among students, emphasizing responsible use of technology.
As part of their efforts, the school is implementing the Smart Pass digital hall pass system, allowing students to check in and out of class digitally.
School officials assert that this system enhances safety and accountability by providing better tracking of students’ whereabouts.
In a letter to parents, Southern Alamance Middle School expressed their commitment to creating a focused learning environment by minimizing disruptions.
The school administration clarified that the implementation of the digital hall pass system comes at no additional cost, as it integrates seamlessly into existing school and district software.
