British writer Benjamin Zephaniah dies aged 65
Benjamin Zephaniah, British poet and writer, passed away at the age of 65, local media reported on Thursday.
Zephaniah was included in The Times list of Britain’s top 50 post-war writers in 2008.
The British poet’s work often addressed political injustice, The Guardian reported.
Benjamin Zephaniah died early Wednesday morning weeks after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, a post on his official account on Instagram confirmed.
In the post: “Benjamin’s wife was by his side throughout and was with him when he passed.”
It continues: “We shared him with the world and we know many will be shocked and saddened by this news. Benjamin was a true pioneer and innovator, he gave the world so much. Through an amazing career including a huge body of poems, literature, music, television and radio, Benjamin leaves us with a joyful and fantastic legacy.”
Black British Book Festival posted regarding the death of the poet: “We’re deeply saddened by the loss of Benjamin Zephaniah, a pioneering Dub Poet and Author whose energy, vibe, and unapologetic work paved the way for Black British Writers. We’re forever grateful for his contributions and commitment. He’s legacy will live on forever.”
