Japan auctions enormous 212Kg Bluefin Tuna
Tuna in Japan is one of the most asked-for dishes.
In one of its fish markets, Japan auctioned one massive 212 kilogram fish for tens of thousands of dollars.
The top-selling tuna at Tokyo’s traditional New Year auction sold at more than $270,000 on Thursday, nearly double last year’s price, breaking a pandemic trend of slumping demand.
The sale is making electronic headways, disseminating the news around the world under different different hashtags, including (#tuna #Japan #豊洲).
Michelin-starred sushi restaurant Onodera Group and Japanese wholesaler Yamayuki forked out 36.04 million yen ($273,000) for the 212-kilo bluefin tuna in the auction at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market, the French news agency noted.
The figure is still only a fraction of the 2019 record price, but marks a recovery for the symbolic auction after three years of idle activity during the COVID-19 pandemic when prices slumped, AFP pointed out.
