Israel’s war on Gaza : Aid situation ‘catastrophic’ for Palestinians
- UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said more than one million people in central and southern Gaza did not receive any food rations in August, adding the “humanitarian situation in Gaza remains beyond catastrophic”.
- Gaza’s Health Ministry says the Israeli military is refusing to coordinate the entry of medical teams affiliated with the emergency polio vaccination campaign into areas in the enclave’s south.
Israel presence in Philadelphi Corridor part of Netanyahu’s wider plan
While US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reiterated his claim that a Gaza deal is within reach despite some remaining critical issues, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “made it perfectly clear that he will never withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor”, Qatar University’s international relations professor Hassan Barari has told Al Jazeera.
Netanyahu’s keenness to maintain control of the southern edge of the Gaza Strip bordering Egypt, which he has previously described as “the gateway to Iran”, is part of a “bigger game than what Blinken is thinking of”, Barari said.
While the US is likely pushing for Israel to withdraw from the area, “Netanyahu is telling them: Don’t even dream of that”, the analyst added.
Pro-Palestine protesters in Michigan ‘speaking out for right reasons’: VP candidate Walz
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, addresses pro-Palestine protesters in Michigan – home to a large Arab and Muslim-American community – saying they are “speaking out for all the right reasons” amid Israel’s war on Gaza.
Walz made the remarks during an interview with Michigan TV station WCMU, where he was questioned about whether he and his presidential running mate, Kamala Harris, would diverge from President Joe Biden’s current policy on the war.
Walz responded that the people of Israel have “the right to defend themselves”, but that “we can’t allow what’s happened in Gaza to happen”.
“The Palestinian people have every right to life and liberty themselves,” said Walz. “We need to continue, I think to put the leverage on to make sure we move towards a two-state solution.”
He added: “I think those folks who are speaking out loudly in Michigan are speaking out for all the right reasons. It’s a humanitarian crisis. It can’t stand the way it is.”
Israeli air strikes pound Gaza City, Nuseirat
The fighting is still raging in northern Gaza. More Israeli strikes are hammering residential homes in the city’s Zeitoun neighbourhood. Six Palestinians have been confirmed killed in one of the latest strikes on a residential home there.
Meanwhile, Israel’s military is presumably working to expand the Netzarim Corridor, where it can control Palestinians’ movement between the north and the south of the Strip, blowing up residential squares near the corridor.
It’s not only the north of the Gaza Strip that has been under fire.
We have heard loud explosions since the early hours of the morning in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp. Initial reports from medical sources are that two Palestinians have been killed in the latest strikes in that battered camp.
Israel taking its ‘brutal crimes’ in Gaza to West Bank: Palestinian Foreign Ministry
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has accused Israel of taking the “brutal crimes” committed in Gaza to the occupied West Bank.
It called on the international community to act in accordance with the principles it claims to uphold, including the protection of human rights.
In a statement, the ministry said the raids conducted in Jenin and Tulkarem were “a clear targeting of Palestinian civilians and the foundations of their national and human existence on their homeland”.

Top diplomats of Germany, Israel meet in Tel Aviv
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has met her Israeli counterpart Israel Katz in Tel Aviv.
She will hold a news conference later today. We will keep you updated.
Yesterday, Baerbock denounced Israel’s military assault on the occupied West Bank and urged elements within the government to stop hightening religious tensions.
Actions such as the visit by far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem “are irresponsible and are already fuelling an absolutely explosive situation. We expect the Israeli side to stop this provocation”, Baerbock said.
She was speaking in Jordan’s Amman, where she said her country would increase humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza by $55m.
