A deadly new coronavirus that emerged in China in late December has spread to at least 177 countries on six continents, with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring the pathogen a global pandemic.

The death toll from the virus has surged past 11,000 and the

number of reported cases is more than 275,000 globally, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Most cases were first reported in mainland China, but the rapid advance of the infection – known as COVID-19 – has triggered worries across the globe, especially in Europe, now the epicentre of the crisis.
