UAE Resident to Climb Africa’s Kilimanjaro to Help an 8-Year-Old Cancer Victim

While many UAE residents are busy planning how to mark the New Year safely during the ongoing pandemic, Dubai resident Mary Christine has it all sorted.

On December 27, 2020, her birthday, Christine will be will attempting to climb 5,895m / 19,340 ft. Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, the tallest mountain in Africa, and one of the seven summits. And no, she is not doing this not to earn a name or fame but has a noble cause attached to it.

Christine is embarking on the seven-day journey to promote an ongoing fundraising efforts for eight-year-old, Karin, a Stage 1 leukemia patient in the UAE.

The Briton will support a charity project in partnership with Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) to raise funds for Karin, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and will require a bone marrow transplant. Karin’s family is unable to cover the medical costs due to limited family income and the high cost of treatments. FoCP is a UAE-based non-profit dedicated to raising cancer awareness and garnering financial support for those who cannot afford treatment.

Excited about the feat, Christine took to social media where she said she would begin her climb on her birthday on December 27, 2020 and will reach the summit in the New Year 2021.

Sharing story of her personal loss, Christine wrote on her Instagram account: “Having lost my dad to cancer many years ago where I felt hopeless and helpless, my mission is now to do my part in helping cancer patients. And there is nothing that would bring me more joy than to give hope and make a real difference in this child’s life and ending 2020 on a very high note.

Mary, who lost her father to cancer in 2005, and has since been committed to helping cancer patients, was moved by the plight of Karin, currently undergoing chemotherapy and whose family are unable to cover the high medical costs of her treatment.

To help support FOCP’s efforts in raising funds for the same, Christine decided to combine her love for adventure with her mission to help cancer patients in need as a volunteer fundraiser for FOCP.

Christine has launched the ‘Climb for Cancer’ campaign on YallaGive, the first online fundraising platform in the Arab world, and will document her experience of preparing for and climbing up the tallest mountain in the African continent on her social media platforms, IG @marycriistine and her Facebook page: MC Climb for Cancer with the hashtag #MaryClimbsForCancer2020.
