Lapid informs Israeli president he can form a government

Israel’s opposition leader has moved closer to unseating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he has officially informed the country’s president that he has reached agreements with political allies to form a new government.

Yair Lapid of the centrist Yesh Atid party formed a coalition government with the help Mansour Abbas, head of the United Arab List, in a historic deal shortly before a midnight deadline on Wednesday.

Lapid has told the president he has rallied the votes needed to form a coalition government to oust Netanyahu.

“Lapid informed the president of the state of Israel… that he has succeeded in forming a government,” his party said in a statement.
