The Sudanese army is issuing a televised statement following reports that president Omar al-Bashir is stepping down.
Al Arabiya sources earlier confirmed that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is set to step downand that an interim council will be announced soon.
Sudanese Minister of Defense Awad Ibn Auf gave the statement on Thursday in which he said that the army has “removed the regime and arrested its head.”
“I announce as minister of defence the toppling of the regime and detaining its chief in a secure place,” Ibn Auf said.
Ibn Auf said Sudan will undergo a transition period for the next two years and dissolving the government while the constitution would be suspeneded.
A state of emergency has been declared in the country for three months.
Ibn Auf said that the closure of the country’s airspace for 24 hours and that border crossings would be closed until further notice.
