Her shop went viral when Kim Kardashian shared her crying face cookie.
In the competitive food industry, every restaurant, bakery, and coffee shop tries to offer something that sets them apart from the rest.
Sarah Silverman is the founder of Funny Face Bakery in New York. Her biscuits are inspired by memes, internet trends, and TV shows with some of the long-running favorites including Drake, Harry Styles, Beyoncé, and Britney Spears.
The self-appointed “first pop-culture bakery in America,” Funny Face Bakery is just as interestingly set up as its offerings are.
Each sugar cookie is cut out from a sketch by owner Sarah Silverman before it is painted on by an artist with royal icing. 18 cookies or two sheets can take up to three or four hours. The faces on each cookie are given unique expressions, such as crying, yelling, or smirking.
Sarah started making cupcakes with her mum in 2016.
After a discouraging start at college studying fashion, Sarah Silverman decided to drop out and enroll in culinary school, as well as working in four different bakeries in New York. Having gathered experience in what worked (and what didn’t), she and her mum set up their first business together in 2016: Cupcake Market.
Under her direction in 2019, the company underwent a total rebrand and took on its current form: Funny Face Bakery.
Now she offers face cookies in a variety of options. Celebrities featured include Drake, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Ryan Gosling, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and more.
“Owning a bakery, you have to meet so many people. You have to be welcoming and friendly. It makes me a warmer person because I used to be kind of shy before.”
Silverman has created hundreds of cookies, but she has no plans to stop any time soon.
