France condemns ‘aggressive’ intervention by Turkey in Mediterranean

France’s defense ministry on Wednesday denounced an “extremely aggressive” intervention by Turkish ships against a French navy vessel participating in a NATO mission in the Mediterranean.

The French sailors were trying to check a cargo ship a few weeks ago on suspicions of taking arms shipments to Libya – forbidden under a UN embargo – when a Turkish frigate carried out targeting maneuvers that suggested a missile strike was imminent, the ministry said.

It condemned an “extremely aggressive act that is unacceptable by an ally against a NATO ship.”
