Economy ministry: UAE increases onion imports amid coronavirus price hike

The UAE has increased its imports of onions after noticing an increase in prices as shoppers stock up amid the coronavirus pandemic, Reuters reported the Economy Ministry as stating on Monday.

Shipments totalling 150,000 kilograms are arrived in the UAE on March 29, and other shipments are due in coming days.

The coronavirus has caused some shoppers to buy more than they normally would.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said earlier this month that the UAE is “infinitely” prepared to supply everyone in the country with food and medicine.

“I’d like to reassure every citizen and resident of the UAE that our Country is infinitely able to supply everyone with all the food and medicine they could ever need. We are well prepared to face any challenge that arises,” the crown prince said.

The number of coronavirus cases in the UAE has climbed to 570, with three fatalities. Fifty-eight have so far recovered.
